All the stores had their doors open, some of the small candy shops had criers outside advertising the newest taste of lollipop, and the vendors of new and trendy fashions had racks set up outside their shops and in their front windows.

The two friends always liked walking around here. And actually, when she had told Hiromi everything she dared to tell about that fiasco, there wasnt a whole lot left of the story and they continued walking in silence until they reached the familiar shopping arcade of the Crossroads. And she was sure to leave out where the cat tails in her yard, the sudden mouse population living in the conservation area behind the school, and the pound of cat nip in her pockets had come from. She recalled everything that didnt reveal the secrets of her trip to the Kingdom of Cats or of the Bureau or of her secret crush on the Baron. Her mind quickly readjusted though and she was instantly in higher spirits, talking the whole way to the Crossroads. They shared in a short laugh and Haru was almost disappointed that Prince Lune hadnt shown up carrying another box of fish crackers to his Queen, Yuki, back in the Kingdom of Cats. Mmhm, and we ended up giving them away to every school in the district. I broke my stick and then the next day you got hundreds of them delivered to the club room. Thats what she wanted to do! Thats what was so urgent to her! She wanted to see him again! She remembered vividly rescuing Prince Lune from the truck and then going to the Cat Bureau the next day to solve her reward problem. Suddenly Haru knew exactly what she wanted to do. Remember how you ran out to save it with your lacrosse stick? Hmm? Yeah, I guess so, replied Haru absently. As they passed a familiar flower shop Hiromi turned to Haru, who seemed to be deep in thought for the kajillionth time that day and said, Hey Haru, remember that time we saw that cat walk out of here and cross the street? They walked across the bridge over the traffic lights and took a left down the sidewalk. The sun had seemed to tear a hole right the through the clouds and gobbled them all up during History period. Haru felt odd carrying an umbrella in such nice weather. Haru looked blankly at her friend for a short while before blinking quickly and nodding her approval. I was thinking: theres a new shop opening up at the Crossroads today, and since the weather cleared up I thought you might want to check it out with me. Hiromi took her seat in front of Haru and leaned over on her chair.

Hiromi peered over her shoulder for a moment then without warning immediately whispered into Harus ear. Later that day, during a bit of spare time, Haru was working on a particularly difficult passage in an English workbook when Hiromi approached from behind. In a quick change of pace she began to sprint as fast as one can while holding an umbrella and school bag and muttered to herself, Well, no sense worrying about it now. Suddenly she heard the distant chime of the electronic bell of her school hum through the rain and she was instantly broken from her train of thought.

She had taken out the trash, twice, all her homework and readings were done, she had laid out the ingredients for dinner on the kitchen counter this morning before leaving, so what was there still to do? When she found herself once again under the raindrops her mind drifted to the different things that her subconscious might want from her. Hiromi had gone on ahead with the assurance that Haru had still enough time to eat before leaving for once, so now Haru walked the sidewalk alone again, passing briefly underneath the crossing bridge to avoid the pitter patter of rain on her light-blue umbrella.įor the past few days Haru had woken up with the feeling that she had something urgent to do, and though looking at her class calendar had revealed no particularly difficult assignments, the sensation had refused to abate.

Normally on a day like today she would have slept in even later that usual, but Hiromi, Harus best friend, had taken it upon herself to personally make a wake up call. The morning was cool the tiniest of raindrops filled the sky and landed with not a sound on the wet pavement and on the sidewalk where Haru placed her determined steps. It had been months since the events in the Kingdom of Cats had occurred, but on the walkor rather runto school in the morning, Haru had no trouble remembering the exhilarating rush that the experience had left in her heart.
